According to some statistics, the number of people that is meditating every day is increasing all the time and I hope that this number will increase more and more.
But there are still a lot of people that are not practicing meditation and that’s why I decided to write this post, to encourage more people to meditate.
Meditation is free, it’s powerful, can be practiced by anyone, everywhere, is extremely beneficial and can help us to feel happier.
Now, what is Meditation?
Meditation is an ancient practice that helps to control our own mind and consequently our own life and discover ourselves.
Personally, it is a way to recharge my batteries and to calm my mind down.
Has it ever happened to you? Where your mind has taken over and, therefore, you are not able to take some thoughts out of your head and you feel without energy and even too tired to sleep?
Meditating helps us to control our mind and thoughts and turn off our mind when we do not need it anymore.
Meditation is essential to feel well and live a Happy Life.
Meditation can help us to eliminate negative thoughts, worries, anxiety, all factors that can prevent us feeling happy.
It has been proved that the practice of meditation, carried out on a regular basis, will mitigate the symptoms of stress and anxiety.
If we make a habit of meditating, we feel mentally fresh and we are able to deal with difficult situations more easily.
To meditate it’s not necessary to be a Buddhist, Hindu or practice any religion, in fact, meditation has nothing to do with religion.
We do not even need to spend hours and hours sitting in the lotus position.
Most of the time we need a reason to start doing something. For instance, when we don’t feel well, we become more open to try everything possible that can help us to feel better and that could be included even meditation.
Personally, I think we don’t need any particular reason to start meditating. Even if we are happy with our life, meditation could be very beneficial, it can help with the quality of our life and also I can see it as a prevention to a series of health issues.
We are used to a quick fix, everywhere advertisements offer us the choice of hundreds of different pills, tablets, gels for a lot of things with the promise that in a short time we will be ok, without having to do anything.
I am refering to a headache, sleeping disorders, anxiety and a lot of other health issues. Don’t get me wrong, we need medicine but a lot of these issues can be sorted out with meditation.
The benefits of meditation are many and have also been demonstrated scientifically.
Main Physical Benefits of Meditation:
– Decreases the physical tension
– Delete psychosomatic disorders caused by tension
– Prophylaxis against stress
– Lowers blood pressure
– Strengthens the immune system
– It slows the aging process
– Recharge our batteries

– Improves concentration
– Lowers the likelihood of distraction

– We are more receptive and learn more easily
– It is easier to exercise control of ourselves and the situation under pressure
– It helps to be more creative
It is unthinkable how many benefits we can get while sitting quietly, doing nothing, as it is described in Zen meditation.
Some simple tips to start Meditating
– It is advisable to try to meditate every day, possibly at the same time to be able to create a new habit.
– Do not drink coffee before you meditate.
– Do not meditate after meals and choose a time of day when you are not full of energy.
– Prepare the place where you want to meditate, open a window to change the air flow and if you like you can use some incense.
– Choose a place not very bright, and wear comfortable clothes.
– It is very important that you are not disturbed during your meditation so disconnect your phone, close the door and if this is the case, put a signal to politely ask not to be disturbed. It is a time of day dedicated to yourself.
Of course, as in all things, it takes time to learn to meditate, but the more you practice the quicker you learn and the more benefits you will get.
If this is the first time you try meditation, you can begin with a simple breathing exercise.
Deep breathing slows the heartbeat, relaxes the muscles, focuses the mind and is a great way to start meditation.
1) Take a deep breath
2) Hold your breath for a few seconds
3) Take a deep exhalation
During the breathing, pay attention to the sensations you are feeling, imagine when you breathe in, the air flow that enters into your nose, then when you hold your breath imagine the air is distributed throughout your body and when you exhale imagine the air coming out of your mouth.
Visualize and then focus on a specific point facilitates the control of your thoughts.
It is important to understand that meditation is an active process.
The art of focusing your attention on a single point is hard work, and you must be committed intentionally!
If you find it difficult to visualize, you can count instead:
one when you breathe in, two when you breathe out and one when you breathe in, and so on.
It is normal that when you meditate, suddenly thoughts of any kind come into your mind but do not get nervous or annoyed, just acknowledge your thoughts and keep on your meditation.
Meditation with a candle. Meditating with closed eyes can be difficult for beginners.
You can then light a candle and use it as a point of focus. This allows you to strengthen your attention with a visual signal and can be very effective.
How to do it?
Sit in a comfortable position and place a lighted candle, at eye level and stare at the flame for a few minutes. Personally, when I started to meditate I used a candle. After staring at the flame for a few minutes, I concluded, closing my eyes and reviewing with closed eyes that the flame slowly disappeared. With practice, the time in which I could see the flames grew.
You do not need to sit with your legs crossed, you can begin to meditate sit normally or lie down (not if you use a candle) and only if you find it comfortable you can sit with your legs crossed.
The important thing is to feel comfortable and do not strive to be in a certain position.
I suggest to start with just a few minutes a day, 2 or 3 and slowly increase the time you meditate.
It is important to remember that the results are different from person to person and before you can see the results may take some time.
But obviously, this is normal. If you decide to join a gym, you can not expect within a few weeks of having a chiseled physique. The more you exercise, the faster you can see the results.
It is important, however, to create a habit. When you begin to feel the benefits of meditation it will be very difficult for you to stop meditating.
An excuse that I hear very often is:
I don’t have time, I have so many things to do during the day that I just can not find a moment to meditate.
Personally, it is a natural excuse that we give to ourselves.
This is just about prioritizing our daily tasks.
I often say that meditation is as important as eating, drinking, sleeping and going to the bathroom.
Time or no time, we know that these activities are essential for our life.
If you want to feel good about yourself then you should start meditating.
Therefore, if mentally we give the same importance to meditation, then we should find the time to meditate.
The important thing is, keep in your mind all the time, if you believe in the efficacy of meditation, you must create a habit of it.
Meditation in the morning and/or in the evening can certainly make a big difference in our life.
