Steps For Learning How To Let Go Of Your Past

On of the happiest moments

In this post, I am going to give some suggestions on how we can let go of our past.

Have you ever tried to run while looking behind you?

If you never did, test it out. Run forward but keep your head turned, and try to look behind you. Chances are you won’t get very far before you end up falling over your own feet. This is definitely something that you shouldn’t do, but there are individuals that live their whole lives looking back. This is a detriment to the future that you could be living. In fact, the more you do this, the more you close yourself off to whatever may be around the corner.

If you aren’t living a life that you love, and you have been dealing with happiness that is fleeting, it’s time to take inventory and let things go.

Letting go of the past can absolutely help you and create amazing moments of joy in your life.

Letting Go Is Not a Weakness by Jay Shetty

Of course, you’re going to need to focus on a few things first, including realizing that you’re dealing with issues. If you never recognize that you have an issue, you may never feel the need to let things go. It’s for that reason that the following steps are going to help you get moving forward.

These are steps to teach you how to let go of the past and rise to all new levels of greatness.

Let go of your past

# Make the decision to let go of your past.

Once you have recognized that you have an issue, you need to make a firm decision to let it go.

# Inventory Your Feelings

Once you have made the decision to change, take inventory of what is bugging you.

Write it down on a piece of paper, and really think about what irks you. Even if you feel as though you’ve been wronged and you were absolutely right, take inventory. You want to make sure that you are putting together a lot of different elements to assess the things that you need to let go. Without this, you will not be able to progress at all. If you don’t know what you want to let go, then you will never let things go. Inventory your feelings, and remember that these are things that you are going to release into the abyss.

# Stop being a victim

If you think you were right and someone did something to hurt you, do yourself a favour, let it go. Forgive these people and also, forgive yourself.

Inner peace

# Take A Look In The Mirror

Go to a mirror, and look yourself in the eye. Even if it seems odd, you need to do this. Go find a mirror, and just give yourself some gratitude. Tell yourself that you love yourself, think positive thoughts, and speak them out. Positive thoughts can help to create our happiness.

What is good about you? What do you love? Just have a conversation with the person in the mirror, and you’ll slowly start to embrace a greatness that many miss. Sometimes, the mirror is the most telling of areas to consider, as you can control so much when you’re speaking into your own reflection. Find ways to love yourself, but if you can’t, just start with one positive thing repeated over and over in the mirror. This can help you just find happiness, even if it’s for a moment in time. Remember: Happiness comes from within.

# Start living in the moment

Focus your attention on the present, the only moment we are alive.

To feel alive and happy we need to live in the present.

How can we do that?

Practicing some Mindfulness:

Make peace with your past

# Focus On Meditative States

Some people call it prayer, others call it meditation, some call it being still, and some even use yoga or tai chi to usher in this progression. Whatever you want to call it, you will need to find a place where you can be alone, in quiet focus for at least 20 minutes a day. Find a place where no one is going to bug you, turn off your phone, turn out the lights, and close your eyes. Don’t sleep. Instead, focus on breathing deeply, and consider the quiet, and stillness. This will help you recharge, revitalize your mind, and give you a fighting chance moving forward. Meditation is the key to unlocking many doors, regardless of how you define it.

# Fill Your Life With Alternatives

Moving towards letting things go, you will find that you are going to have voids. Fill those voids with positive things. Visit a museum, look at art, find good music, and just enjoy new things. Learn something, perhaps take a class in cooking, get a pet, do something that allows for joy and improvement to manifest. Sometimes, the hardest thing to do when letting go of the past is finding avenues for the future. The goal is not to empty out your brain and life to the point where you’re in an empty room. The goal is to find unity with hope, peace, love, grace, and joy. These things will absolutely transcend the emptiness of letting go and being left in the cold. This may take time, so don’t sign up for 10 classes and try to do everything in one week. The goal is to gradually improve because that’s where you will establish roots.

# Give To Others

Here’s one of the biggest things that you can do to help you let go of the past, and it’s to give back to others. Volunteer at a shelter, an old folks home, a hospital, or just about anywhere you can. By simply giving to others, you will find yourself amazed with joy. The joy that you will feel can have a positive manifestation towards good health. Researchers have found that people who actively work with acts of kindness, have better cardiovascular health, improved mood, stability, and much more. Give to others regularly, and you will find that you will not have room in your heart for bitterness, anger, or anything that is going to cause you to feel downcast.

# Exercise

The above elements are great options to work with in order to let go of the past. However, you want to make sure to exercise as well. Put some time into your own wellbeing by getting into motion. Exercise releases positive secretions into the system, and elevates mood. You may be frustrated by life, the past, and a lot more, but for at least 30 minutes of your day, you can find you will not dwell on those things. Exercising does the body and mind a lot of good, so don’t dismiss this in your quest to forget the past and secure a future.

All in all, the steps mentioned above are just some of the things that you can do to ensure that you’re seeing great things change in your life and most of all you let off you past. Take it slowly if you must, but just keep putting one foot in front of the other.
