10 Tips on how to be successful on your new year resolutions

As the New Year is just around the corner it is a tradition for a lot of people to start the New Year making some New Year Resolutions

For those who don’t know what a New Year resolution is here is my explanation:

A New Year resolution is a promise to do an act of self-improvement or something nice for other people, like for instance, stop smoking or be kinder to the colleagues, could be anything really.

Unfortunately not a lot of people succeed at that and after few weeks or even few days they just abandon the idea, sometimes with a big disappointment which can knock their confidence.

In this post, I am going to give my suggestions on how to stick to the new year resolutions and be successful.

My suggestions on how to be successful with your New Year resolutions

Character is the ability to carry out a good resolution

In this post, I am going to use “stop smoking” as an example, so what you need to do is just use these guidelines for your own new year resolution.

# 1 First of all, if you have more than one new year resolution, choose and start with the one more important for you, it is much easier to succeed. I will explain later what to do if you have other new year resolutions.

# 2 Decide a short period, the best is to go for a period of a month time.

Why decide a short period?

If you decide you are not going to smoke for just a month, it is much easier to reach your goal. At the end of the month, having experienced the benefits of not smoking, it is more likely you want to carry on not smoking. If you really enjoy smoking, it is also much easier to accept mentally, not smoking for just a month than thinking, oh gosh, I won’t smoke anymore.

30 days is also the period of time needed to create a new habit.

# 3 At the end of the 30 days, you can, if you want, start working on your other new year resolution.

# 4 Make a written plan (included all the steps necessary) to achieve your new year resolution.

If it is an addiction you want to eliminate, like as I said before, you want to stop smoking, you need to add in your life, at least, one new good habit.

Dedicate some time to write your plan, the more detailed is the plan, the more likely you are successful. Remember, the plan must be realistic.

# 5 Keep a Journal

Every day write some notes about how the day went. It helps you to keep you focused and monitor your progress.

It is very important you congratulate yourself if you have succeeded. In case you didn’t manage to keep up with your promise, don’t make it a big deal. Feeling disappointed doesn’t change anything and doesn’t help. Remind yourself, tomorrow is going to be another day and it will be better. Don’t give up, if in 30 days you have smoked for a few days, it is definitely better than not having tried to stop not smoking.

# 6 When you make a new year resolution obviously you have a reason for that.

Let’s say you want to stop smoking for your kids, or because you feel unfit or because you can’t financially afford it anymore.

Whatever your new year resolution is, what you have to focus on and also write it down in your plan, are the benefits of achieving your new year resolution.

Here is an example:

these are the benefits I will get from not smoking:

  • Healthy reasons
  • I save money
  • I make my kids happier

# 7 Keep in mind the bad consequences.

When you decide you want to stop smoking, do yourself a favour. Do an online search about the bad effects of smoking. Even if you already know that smoking is not good for your health, when you do a search and you read the horrible consequences that smoking can have, looking at the pictures of damages lungs can help you push away the “pleasure” of smoking. When you feel like you want to have a cigarette, think about what you read and the pictures you saw. It will definitely help you stop smoking.

It is all about mentally associating smoking as a bad thing for you, so you will not feel like you are forcing yourself not to smoke, but it will become your choice.

# 8 Check your Desire

How bad do you want to achieve your new year resolution?

It all depends on all your Desire. If you have a strong desire you are very likely to succeed. This also works for  everything you want to achieve in life. The desire is the driving force.

Like a fire you want to keep it alive, you need to keep your desire alive and burning. That’s why you need to check your plan daily to remind yourself of your goal, remind the reasons you are doing it and the benefits.  Doing it daily help you to keep you desire burning.

# 9 Share your new year resolution with a friend or two

Share it with a close person, a person you can trust and ask for his or her support. When you feel weak, talk to this person. It can help you remind the reasons why you are doing that.

If you have tried this new year resolution other times in the past and you didn’t succeed, I suggest you don’t go public and tell everyone about your intentions. They might easily make some remarks or comments about your previous times and it could easily annoy you and even worse, make you lose your enthusiasm.

# 10 You need a daily motivation

Motivation doesn’t last long so you need to motivate yourself daily. As Zig Ziglar says: “People often say that motivation doesn’t last. Well, neither does bathing – that’s why we recommend it daily.”

Do something to motivate yourself daily, read some inspirational and motivational Quotes every day and keep positive, remember Positive Thinking can create our Happiness.

Here I am at the end of this post about how to be successful on your new year resolutions.

I would like to give you one more tip: if you are not already meditating, then I suggest you start meditating, it will definitely help you achieve what you want. If interested, here are my posts about Meditation.

Now I would like to wish you a Fantastic New Year and remember, you don’t need a new year to make a change in your life, any day is good to start changing.

Happy New Year wishes
